The Therapist as Shaman with Sherry Marshall
Shamanism is a direct experience of spiritual knowledge and the therapist is a shaman.
‘Every client carries his or her inner therapist inside them. They come to us not knowing this truth. We succeed and are at our best when we give the therapist who resides within them, a chance to work.’ Adapted from Albert Schweitzer
In this workshop, we will explore together, the theory and practice of how we can access and use our shamanic power in our everyday lives; working with people, the earth and in relationship with ourselves and others. By shifting our awareness, using earth based psychology to connect with our Process Mind, we can shape shift, call in our power and become aware in the midst our altered states, how to make this all useful to ourselves and our clients. Trance or altered states allow us to access our dreaming and then allows us to integrate into our daily lives. ‘Shamans must pay attention to unusual events in themselves, their clients and their environment’. ‘The shamanic path is based upon sensing unpredictable events in yourself and the earth…. The dream time spirit of the earth grounds, inspires and teaches; it is an unfathomable being by itself. The story is that of dreaming an eternal vision that lives on in everyone and cannot be destroyed.’ Dr. Arnold Mindell
“Carlos Castaneda’s Don Juan figure, says that the spirit determines how you identify yourself, whether you remain an average person, and whether and when you become a seer or a warrior, capable of sensing and following the signals and powers of the earth.
One of the key aspects of a shaman’s life is healing the people and healing the land. For centuries, shamans have been involved with earth healing by using their ability to communicate with the consciousness of land, bodies of water and other such natural features of their landscape. “Shamans work with the spirit or the soul. They heal illness at the soul level. They gain knowledge and insight from working with the spirits of nature such as rocks and trees, the land, and they gain knowledge from working with spirits of animals and humans such as their ancestors. For the shaman everything is alive and carries information, you can call this spirit, energy, or consciousness. The teaching of detachment, and letting go of one’s ego is a central lesson for the shaman.”
