What helps a Team work Better

  • Good Communication. Communicate, communicate, communicate!

  • Share knowledge, suggestions, ideas, proposals and solutions within the team.
  • Take time to help others in the team and ask for assistance when necessary.
  • Respect the opinions of other's
  • Develop flexibility and tolerance. As team members develop the capacity to lead and follow
  • Know your own and other's strengths and weaknesses
  • Diversity within the team is positive
  • Build trust between team members
  • Have Recognition and acknowledgement of each other's skills
  • Working on a mutual goal is paramount
  • If there are conflicts or issues, relate them back to the shared purpose or goals
  • Don't blame others in the team. Pick up your own responsibilities and allow colleagues to do the same.
  • Work professionally together and don't allow 'personality differences' or different styles of working to turn into 'scapegoating' or sabotaging individuals
  • Members can sort out their differences by finding out how they are useful for the task.
  • Support colleagues ideas or at least be open to hearing them
  • Have Good listening skills.
  • Commit to team tasks
  • Know your gifts and strengths and what you bring to the team. Value these even if the team neglects to momentarily appreciate them.
  • Don't take things too personally
  • Be willing to learn new skills and improve old skills.
  • Be clear about allocated responsibilities and goals.
  • Set up goals and timeframes for tasks and communicate with others.
  • Be aware of hierarchical systems within the workplace. Do not work out your personal issues with 'authority' figures in the workplace or undermine the team strength by 'badmouthing' other people or gossiping.
  • Deal with conflict constructively. Talk with the person concerned directly, and discuss what has happened and how you can support each other to achieve the goal or get the tasks done.
  • Ideas, not individuals are critically analysed
  • Timelines and bench marks are set and monitored and outcomes are delivered.
  • Work out how you can use your gifts and strengths to make successful outcomes whilst also facilitating others to contribute their strengths.
  • Everyone in a team must facilitate their own contribution or get assistance to do so. ie. rather than complaining that you don't feel heard/included/ considered etc. you can say, 'there is some more information that needs to be understood or integrated in the planning/action etc.'
  • Whatever you do, ask, how is this good for the clients and is it good for the team?
  • Bring in differences, not for their own sake, but as being useful for the outcome
  • Changes are communicated clearly and expectations are discussed and roles and responsibilities are clearly defined
  • Be clear who is responsible for what and avoid overlapping authority in the team.
  • Have opportunities of social time with each other in an atmosphere that encourages open communication. eg in a group lunch.
